ORDER OF WORSHIP | 17 MAY

Questions for Discussion

1. Try to describe, in your own words, the main point of this sermon.

2. How does the idea of "addition by subtraction" help us think of the "negative" commandments as a "positive" vision for what our life as God's people is meant to be?

3. Can you recall some of the things on God's not-to-do list? How do these items begin to suggest what God has in mind for us, his image-bearers, when it comes to Sabbath?

4. What is the one thing that keeps you from entering into Sabbath rest? Does the idea of a 24-hour Pause sound impossible to you? Why or why not?

5. Reflect on the fact that the Sabbath commandment comes in the middle of the 10 Commandments, a summary of the moral law that reflects God's own character. Does the fact that Sabbath existed before sin entered the world suggest that Sabbath (a) continues for Christians even after Christ fulfills it, and (b) on into eternity?

6. Can you think of someone who embodies the idea of "work hard, rest well, foster work and rest"? What is their life like? What is their bearing like?

7. What is one thing you might do this week to intentionally apply what we've learned about Sabbath in a way that honors the Lord and honors the way God made us?
