ORDER OF WORSHIP | 24 MAY

Questions for Discussion

1. Try to describe, in your own words, the main point of this sermon.

2. Which of the “top ten things you might not have known about the Fifth Commandment” was the most surprising to hear? Which was the most impactful to your personal spiritual journey? Why?

3. Do you have “an authority problem”? Is it difficult or easy for you to honor authorities in your life? Too difficult? Too easy? What life experiences have shaped your gut instincts when it comes to “fathers and mothers”? Do you think that living in a Western-style rights-based democracy influences your perspective on authority? How?

4. Try to describe how both the Lord Jesus Christ and the Father fulfill the Fifth Good Word in each of the following aspects of Jesus’ incarnation: (1) his life and ministry, (2) his crucifixion, (3) his resurrection, ascension, and session. Can you think of some Father-Son honoring-and-glorifying dynamics in these and other aspects of the Son’s ministry? Can you think of some ways they fulfill the Fifth Commandment that were not mentioned in the sermon?

5. What is one specific way you sense that Jesus Christ is calling you to follow him in honoring “your mother(s) and father(s)” in the months ahead? What key attitudes, words, and actions would need to change, and how will those changes come about? Who can come alongside you and remind you of Jesus’ fulfillment of this commandment, and of the Spirit’s work in your heart, as you seek to be conformed to Jesus in this aspect of your Christian life?
